Things I've learned while leveling crafts in FFXI:
1. Plan ahead -
Don't buy crystals when it's new moon or full moon, as crystal price usually goes up to twice or even 3 times during those moons. If you're planning to do a skill run on an upcoming new/full moon, buy it when it's cheap.
2. Farming sucks -
If you're cheap & poor like I am, you'll farm instead of buy the ingredients needed for your craft whenever you can. Check out the subcrafts you need, and with a little planning you can farm for both at the same time:
Giant femurs: dhalmel leather.
Ram horns: ram leather.
Tiger fangs: tiger leather.
Saint/hermit's rings: copper/brass ingot, glass fiber.
So on so forth.
3. Moon helps -
I personally find full moon lightsday really good for the 7+ skill gaps (you'll need advanced support). However when the skill gap is very small (<3), quatermoon with dark/weak moons are the best in my personal experience.
4. Whining works -
Complaining about the lack of skill ups to my LS while synthing helped a lot (people in my LS can testify how many times I report a 0.1 right after I whined, complained, or raged about not getting skill ups), but annoy your LS members at your own risk.
